Close to 2.000 products, out of which 85 % manufactured in Lorient. 150 employees, ¾ of staffcount in production. Plastimo becomes an industrial operation, the R & D gets organised and Plastimo obtains a national Export award in 1970.

1st magnetic compass entirely manufactured from plastic materials. As early as 1974, the range consists of 20 compass models, specifically designed for recreational boating, 3 to 4 times cheaper than traditional compasses in brass and mineral glass. With compasses, Plastimo’s awareness so far limited to France and focused on lifejackets and fenders, takes an international dimension. Worldwide recognition was further accelerated in 1975 by the launch of the double reading Contest bulkhead compass.

300 employees. Located on the Lorient-France fishing harbour, the factory spreads over 4500 m² and extensions are necessary. Export activity is expanding (50 countries) and Plastimo is awarded the Export Oscar.

Shark navigation electronic instruments and Navik windvane steering. Oldie but Goldie, the Navik wind steering system was showcased in Plastimo catalogue for 30 years, until 2006. Plastimo is awarded the "Laurier d'Or de l'Expansion" (Growth Golden Laurel).

215 page Catalogue, 2.500 products. 400 employees in Lorient-France. Plastimo UK subsidiary opens to serve the United Kingdom market.

The Research & Development team gets specialised, the brand’s DNA focuses on Safety and Compasses. Capitalising on its expertise in sewing and welding of coated fabrics, Plastimo introduces its first liferaft.The principle of twin chamber, tube-within-a-tube (still exclusive today) provides extra reliability and durability. Plastimo is the innovating pioneer of liferaft technology : watertight vacuum-packed pouch, double action firing head…

Reflecting the company’s confidence in its technology, Plastimo was the first  -now widely imitated-  to offer a 12-year warranty on its liferafts. 1979 : 470 employees in Lorient.

Plastimo develops a real marketing approach : brandbuilding, corporate communication, market surveys, focus groups with yachtsmen and racers… And enters new market segments :
1981 : windsurfing range
1982 : seawear collection including the iconic Clima jacket. 1984 : first headsail reefing in composite material
1987 : Navman, first portable digital chart plotter.

Pioneer of inflatable lifejackets : anticipating the future success of inflatable lifejackets, Plastimo launches its first model on Export markets. When inflatable lifejackets get officially approved in 1995 in France, Plastimo already has a consistent range and a strong useful experience of such products on Export markets.

AWARDS FOR COMPASSES : in 1992, the Offshore compass is granted the Industrial Design Award in France, followed by equivalent prizes in Germany, USA and Japan. In 1994, the Iris 50 handbearing compass is awarded the same prize in France and Japan.

2000

2000

Plastimo confirms its position as Safety Specialist, as testified by great skippers’ loyalty. In 2000 : Grant Dalton, winner of The Race on Club Med, contributes to the development of the Optisafe lifejacket. Two young « promising » skippers, also wearing Plastimo’s Optisafe : Alain Gautier et Michel Desjoyeaux

2008 : AdvanSea electronic range is launched.

2010 : Lorient-France factory is certified  ISO 9001 for the design, manufacture and servicing of lifejackets and liferafts.
